The medical profession in Rugby League recognised as Dr Dane Vishnubala hosts his first CPD event

Dr Dane Vishnubala underlined the crucial and largely unsung contribution of the medical profession to Rugby League at all levels after hosting his first CPD Event as the RFL’s Chief Medical Officer at Leeds Beckett University this week.

The event, held in partnership with LBU and Sempris Insurers, was attended by doctors, physios and therapists connected to clubs in Super League, Championship and League One, as well as others without any direct connection to the sport.

“Our sports medicine and science CPD evening was a great place to connect with the doctors, physios and sports therapists who bring a wealth of experience to the game and help keep our players safe,”said Dr Vishnubala, who joined the RFL in February.

“It was great to share and exchange ideas, and to see how enthusiastic and committed to the sport our Rugby League medical community is.

“The awareness of the importance of such medical expertise has undoubtedly increased in recent years, through factors as varied as the Covid pandemic and the growing knowledge around concussive and sub-concussive events in contact sports such as Rugby League.

“The delegates at our CPD event received comprehensive updates from our Deputy CMO Dr Gemma Phillips; from Richard Yates, the RFL’s Head of Legal; and from Prof Ben Jones and Research Fellow Dr Cameron Owen, who presented the latest data from the instrumented mouthguards which are now being worn across the Men’s and Women’s Super League competitions.

“We are grateful to Sempris and to Leeds Beckett University, whose excellent facilities were ideal for our event, and who also work closely with the RFL’s England Performance Department.

“It’s important we hold these events regularly, and we have already arranged another CPD in August, and are planning a larger-scale event in the autumn.”
