Primary Rugby League
Primary Rugby League is a modified version of the game played by Children between the ages of 6 to 11 years of age
Primary Rugby League for most children is their first experience of Rugby League and is a step towards a lifelong involvement with the sport and physical activity.
Therefore it is vitally important we instil the correct ethos of fun, enjoyment and development. Primary Rugby League is a modified version of the game played by Children between the ages of 6 to 11 years of age, and is commonly known as Grass Roots.
Children’s motivations for taking part in sport are very different from adults.
Adults have a responsibility to cater for children’s motivations to make the experiences FUN and ENJOYABLE. An important part of Primary Rugby League is that ALL the players play all the time and there are no substitutes.
Primary Rugby League is modified to increase children’s motivations and involvement in key areas of rugby league like passing, catching, evading, tackling and scoring trys. Smaller sided games increase skill opportunities considerably and this is beneficial to the development of children.
2025 Primary Rugby League Update!
We’re excited to kick off another fantastic year of Primary Rugby League (PRL)!
For many children, PRL is their first introduction to Rugby League — a chance to develop a lifelong love for the game and for being active. That’s why we place fun, enjoyment, and development at the heart of everything we do.
To help make this season a positive and rewarding experience for everyone — players, parents, and coaches — we’ve put together a range of helpful resources. These will explain how and why the game is modified for younger players, and what you can expect on game day.
What’s New for 2025: Tag Rugby for U6 and U7
Starting this season, Under 6 and Under 7 teams will play Tag Rugby League.
We understand that this might be a new concept for some, so we’ve created a short webinar featuring medical and player development experts to explain why Tag Rugby is being introduced and how it benefits young players.
