Sustainability
Our vision is to lead the rugby league community in fostering a sustainable future, where our passion for the game aligns with a commitment to environmental action.
To achieve this vision, we have developed the RFL Environmental Sustainability Strategy, focusing on three key areas: tackling net zero, try scoring our resources, and converting our practice.
RFL’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy
Inherent in the RFL strategy 2022-2030 is a recognition that our grassroots underpin everything. We recognise that the communities where rugby league is played are more likely to be adversely affected by climate change. This strategy is not only about addressing environmental impact; it’s about safeguarding the future of rugby league and protecting the communities who support it. The well-being of our players, fans, clubs, and the wider community is intrinsically linked to the health of our environment, and we have a responsibility to lead by example.
I invite everyone who loves and supports rugby league to join us on this journey. Our sport has always stood for resilience, unity, and strength in the face of challenges. Together we can channel that same spirit towards protecting our environment, ensuring that our sport not only survives but thrives in a changing world.

RFL Sustainability Network
We, as the RFL, are delighted to launch our first Sustainability Network in conjunction with the release of the sport’s first Environmental Sustainability Strategy.
Sign up here: https://forms.office.com/e/wiE7biLr7f
The RFL Sustainability Network aims to create a community for individuals, groups, clubs, foundations, and stakeholders with a passion and drive to create a sustainable future for sport.
The network is a free and informal support system that is open to all across the sport.
The network, which has recently launched, can be accessed through a simple sign up and as part of the community you will be first to hear about a wide range of exciting plans and projects hosted by the RFL in our sustainability efforts.
Going Forward
Summary of our work so far and beyond:
- In November 2024, we appointed 2 Environmental Sustainability Officers across the RFL and Rugby League Commercial to champion sustainable practices throughout the sport.
- In February 2025, we become a signatory of both the United Nations Sport for Climate Action and the IUCN Sport for Nature Framework.
- We extended our membership with BASIS, the British Association for Sustainability in Sport.
- Rugby League Commercial have just secured a new partnership with clean energy solutions company, Egg, a partnership that will highlight the importance of fostering sustainable practices in sport and beyond.
- We will continue discussions with our partners, suppliers, clubs, and stakeholders to identify areas we could reduce our carbon emissions and work together to support and advocate sustainable actions across RL.
- We will empower our workforce through training programmes, such as Carbon Literacy, delivered by our own Carbon Literacy trained staff.
- Over the next 12 months we will develop a Carbon Reduction Plan, one of the core commitments of the UN Sport for Climate Action Framework, alongside reporting on the progress we make on our emission reductions as an operation.
