St Helens will face Wigan Warriors in the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup Final at the iconic Wembley Stadium this Saturday (KO 11.45am) – the first time the two famous rivals have faced one another in Rugby League’s most prestigious event in over 20 years.
This year’s showpiece sees current holders St Helens, who are aiming for their fifth Challenge Cup triumph in a row, meet one of the competition’s youngest sides in Wigan Warriors – led by Lance Todd Trophy winner Denis Betts.
The Warriors will be playing at Wembley Stadium for the very first time after reaching their maiden Challenge Cup final thanks to an impressive 44-14 win over Leeds Rhinos in the semi-finals in York last month.
The Cherry & White have been prolific throughout 2025 winning seven from seven, having beaten Barrow Raiders, London Broncos, Cardiff Demons and Leeds in the Challenge Cup, whilst stunning reigning champions York Valkyrie in the Betfred Women’s Super League opener before dominating defeats of Barrow and the Rhinos.
The signs of this season’s ascendency were evident in 2024 with the Warriors reaching the Semi-Finals of both the Betfred Challenge Cup and Play-Offs, whilst also becoming Nines Champions.
St Helens are Women’s Challenge Cup royalty having won the competition a staggering eight times and they are still determined as ever to retain the prestigious trophy. However, having beaten Leeds Rhinos in the last three finals - and York the one before - Saturday will break new ground.
The Red V are looking to life the trophy for the fifth time in a row, whereas Wigan is for the first time ever and with the two sides yet to face one another in the Super League this season, the occasion is set to be the fiercest battle between the two sides yet.
The last time the two teams met in the Challenge Cup was back in the 2021 quarter finals, with Saints walking away with an easy 36-0 victory – they’ll be hoping for more of the same on Saturday.
Much like Wigan, they’ve had a strong start to 2025 and come into the weekend off the back of a narrow 16-12 win against York Valkyrie in the Super League which can also be said of their Challenge Cup semi-final in May. With just one try each, it was the goal kicking which proved to be the difference on the scoreboard that day with the current Cup holders celebrating a 10-6 victory.
