The NRLW kicked back into action last week with three of England Women’ superstars lighting up the competition Down Under.
Paige Travis became the first player from St Helens to make the move to the NRLW at the end of last season and made an epic debut last Thursday during Parramatta Eels’ 18–16 win over Cronulla. Whilst the second-row didn’t get on the scoresheet, her selection in the starting line-up and full 70 minutes on the field reflect a confidence in her ability from coaching staff.
Known as a powerful forward and reliable in defence, Travis made her presence felt in the middle and looks well-set to play a key role in the Eels’ campaign this year.
Another of England’s premier second-rows was also in action last week - Hollie-Mae Dodd. The 21-year-old was in the starting line-up for Canberra’s Round 1 clash against St George Illawarra Dragons, which ended in a 14-36 defeat.
Dodd made an early impact, shrugging off multiple defenders to score the Raiders' first try in the 12th minute, bringing the score to 6-4, and was one of the side’s standout performers, finishing with a team-high of 31 tackles. Despite the loss, Dodd’s scoring and defensive work showed she has quickly adapted to the pace and intensity of the NRLW and looks set for a strong season ahead.
2023 NRLW Grand Final winner Georgia Roche was back for Newcastle Knights last week making an immediate impact in their match against the Canterbury Bulldogs. The 24-year-old opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a sharp solo try, slicing through the defence after a well-timed dummy highlighting her ability to break matches open.
While they started well, Newcastle couldn't match the enthusiasm of the new Bulldogs side throughout the whole game, going down 26-12, giving up too many errors which forced them into a mountain of defence.
