Leigh Leopards continue their undefeated run and claim National Championship glory
In a fiercely contested National Championship Final, Leigh Leopards emerged victorious, claiming the title with a hard-fought 22-18 win over London Broncos. Despite a slow start and a first half dominated by a physical and determined London side, Leigh's resilience saw them lift the trophy and solidify their place as champions.
The Broncos made a strong statement from the outset, taking Leigh by surprise with their aggressive and physical play, scoring an impressive try in the right-hand corner from the get-go. Twenty minutes in, London crossed the try line again, although a missed conversion kept the score at 0-8 in their favour.
Leigh struggled to find their footing, missing tackles and struggling to clear their own half, while London's sharp footwork and strong carries kept the pressure on, forcing a goal-line drop-out after just 25 minutes.
It took until the 30th minute for Leigh to finally respond, scoring in the right-hand corner to narrow the gap to 4-8. A missed conversion kept them trailing, but the try boosted their confidence, and they equalised just before half-time with a second try. Despite the conversion attempt bouncing off the post, Leigh had clawed their way back into the game at 8-8.
As the second half began, Leigh had the wind at their backs and momentum on their side, but London struck back first with an interception try, taking a 8-14 lead. Leigh quickly responded with a try of their own, levelling the score at 14-14. With 56 minutes on the clock, a penalty awarded to Leigh allowed them to take a crucial two-point lead, sending the crowd into a roar as the Leopards edged in front, 16-14.
London showed no signs of backing down, racing in for another try, though the missed conversion left them with a narrow 16-18 advantage. But Leigh's determination shone through, and they battled their way over the line for a decisive try, converting to secure a 22-18 lead. Despite London's best efforts, Leigh held firm to seal the victory and the National Championship.
With this win, Leigh Leopards are now National Champions and will look ahead to the crucial Super League Promotion Play-Off clash on Sunday 6 October, when they will face Featherstone Rovers.
This highly anticipated double-header, which also includes the Betfred Super League Women's Grand Final, promises to be an unforgettable day of Women’s Rugby League action as Leigh aim for Super League glory.
