Wigan Warriors are proud to announce that the upcoming Betfred Super League clash against Huddersfield Giants on Friday, 11 July (K.O. 8pm) at the Brick Community Stadium will be a celebration of rugby league legend Sir Billy Boston, in tribute to his recently awarded knighthood.
Sir Billy Boston – a towering figure in the sport’s history and quite possibly Wigan’s greatest ever player – was awarded a knighthood in the King’s Birthday Honours for services to rugby league and the community. The match will pay tribute to his legacy, both on and off the pitch, with a pre-match ceremony, commemorative content, and a chance for fans to join in celebrating this monumental achievement.
There will also be a special musical performance ahead of kick off from Russell Watson, and for the crescendo, supporters will be given the opportunity to stand and applaud Sir Billy Boston before kick off.
The evening will also serve as an Armed Forces Celebration Night, recognising and honouring the service and sacrifice of our armed forces, with personnel in attendance and special matchday activities planned in their honour. Members of the air and sea cadets along with the Royal Marines will be joining in at Wigan on the night.
Kris Radlinski, Chief Executive of Wigan Warriors, said: “Billy Boston is not only a Wigan legend but a national treasure. This knighthood is a long-overdue recognition of his remarkable contribution to sport and society. July 11 will be a special night, and we invite all fans to join us in celebrating Sir Billy, while also recognising the courage and dedication of our armed forces.
“We promise to do Billy and the Armed Forces proud with a spectacular show that will long be remembered.”
Tickets are now available and fans are encouraged to secure their seats for the game and arrive early to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the full celebration programme.
